3 Months to No.1 Book Review

Aimed at both complete beginners and seasoned pros of SEO, 3 Months to No.1: The 2020 “No-Nonsense” SEO Playbook for Getting Your Website Found on Google by Will Coombe offers a step by step approach to the Google rankings game. The author is a former airline pilot who quit his flying career to build one of the top SEO agencies in London. His aim with this book is to share his knowledge in an easily accessible way.

The opening chapter immediately gets the ball rolling, stating bluntly that “SEO’s not for everyone”. With this message, the author is acknowledging the complexities and difficulties of SEO – and its importance. A high Google ranking can be the making or the breaking of a company, and yet many businesses do not give SEO the attention that it requires. Coombe labels such businesses into three groups: the “SEO begrudgers”, the “quick fix seekers”, and the “DIY money savers”, all of which are ultimately doomed to fail. Coombe assures the reader that, by reading this book, they are well on the way to both understanding and utilizing the power of effective SEO.

A few chapters on, Coombe likens SEO to a performance enhancing drug, in that it “quickly maximizes whatever the natural ceiling of your ability is.” This is an interesting take, and certainly reflects the current climate of online business. As the author elaborates, younger generations have grown up in a world with Google, and instinctively know how to assess a business based on its online presence. In terms of business growth, Coombe insightfully states that the younger generations are “an online marketing oil that’s about to fissure.”

Moving on to the nitty-gritty of SEO later in the book, Coombe demonstrates his expertise by tackling some important technicalities. For instance, when discussing using a separate website for back-links, he cautions “make sure you don’t link back to them. Reciprocal links carry no weight in Google because it’s obvious that you’re helping each other out just for SEO.” Small, seemingly insignificant practices such as this can make a world of difference to a website’s SEO, and Coombe does a great job of highlighting mistakes that are commonly made.

To summarize, this book does a great job of outlining the importance of SEO, and provides excellent instructions on how to put it all into practice. Will Coombe has been on the front lines of SEO for nine years, and his experience and expertise certainly shine in 3 Months to No.1. It’s not a long book, but those with prior experience with SEO may wish to skip ahead to parts two or three in order to avoid reading that which they already know. All in all, it’s a great read which offers valuable insights and presents the various technicalities of SEO in an easily digestible manner.
